Pigmentation problems

Acanthosis Nigricans

Acanthosis nigricans is a skin condition characterized by dark, thickened, velvety patches that commonly appear in body folds such as the neck, underarms, and groin. It often affects individuals who are overweight, have insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, or hormonal disorders, and can sometimes be a sign of an underlying medical issue. Though not harmful on its own, its presence may signal a need for further evaluation of metabolic health.

Your Darabi Dermatology provider can help manage acanthosis nigricans by addressing the underlying cause, recommending weight loss if appropriate, and prescribing topical treatments like retinoids or exfoliating agents to improve the skin’s appearance.

Melasma

Melasma is a common skin condition that causes brown or gray-brown patches of discoloration, typically on the face, including the cheeks, forehead, upper lip, and chin. It most often affects women, particularly those with medium to darker skin tones, and is commonly triggered by sun exposure, hormonal changes (such as during pregnancy or with birth control use), and genetics. While melasma is harmless, it can be persistent and challenging to treat.

Your Darabi Dermatology provider can offer a variety of treatments, including topical lightening agents like hydroquinone, retinoids, chemical peels, tranexamic acid and laser therapy, along with strict sun protection to help fade discoloration and prevent recurrence.

Tinea Versicolor

Tinea versicolor is a common fungal skin problem caused by an overgrowth of a yeast that normally lives on the skin. It leads to discolored patches—either lighter or darker than the surrounding skin—often appearing on the chest, back, shoulders, or neck. The condition is more common in teenagers and young adults, especially in warm, humid climates or in those who sweat excessively. Although tinea versicolor is not harmful or contagious, it can be persistent and cosmetically bothersome.

Your Darabi Dermatology provider can diagnose it easily and recommend effective treatments such as topical antifungal creams, shampoos, or oral medications to clear the infection and prevent recurrence.

Vitiligo

Vitiligo is a chronic skin condition characterized by the loss of pigment-producing cells (melanocytes), resulting in smooth, white patches on the skin that can appear anywhere on the body. It can affect people of all skin types but is often more noticeable in those with darker complexions. While the exact cause is unknown, vitiligo is believed to be an autoimmune disorder and may be associated with other autoimmune conditions such as thyroid disease, type 1 diabetes, or alopecia areata.

Though there is no cure, your Darabi Dermatology provider can offer treatments to help restore pigment or even out skin tone, including topical corticosteroids, calcineurin inhibitors, light therapy, and in some cases, surgical options or camouflage cosmetics.
